INSPIRING TOURISTS

Marco Polo

More phantasmagoria than memoir, The Travels of Marco Polo proves that a good story will go a long way. Uninhibited by fact-checking editors or a critical audience, the Portuguese explorer transports himself to places he never visited, to meet people he invented and see things he only heard about from other travellers. Kind of like a Fox news reporter, I guess.

Anthony Bourdain

You could like Anthony Bourdain just for his flaws. Whether he's on the receiving end of a Russian massage, skiing in Dubai or riding a camel through the Moroccan desert, the most humanlike of the celebrity chefs can be counted on to drink and swear (but no longer smoke) in front of the camera. More importantly, Tony is a funny guy and he can actually write. Plus, he has that Elliot Gould hair going for him. And bad teeth. When was the last time you saw bad teeth on American television?

Somerset Maugham

I wish my name was Somerset. Or maybe I just wish I could write like Somerset. Open his travelogue The Gentleman in the Parlour on any page and you'll be greeted with a graceful turn of phrase, a concise observation or a witty remark. This little book is so clever and insightful, it's hard to believe Maugham made the trip from Yangon to Haiphong only once. Then again, travel used to be a slow affair. You can probably see a lot more of Asia when you're traveling on a mule.
